Isternia
At a distance of 18km from the port of the main town (the
Chora), amphitheatrically built on the slopes of Mt.
Meroviglia, is the village of Isternia. It
is
the
birthplace
of many
Greek
marble
sculptors. The village is virtually a
natural open-air museum of marble - composed as it is of
marble-paved lanes, marble steps, houses adorned with marble
lintels, marble fountains and its marble busts and statues
fashioned by the local sculptors. Preciously preserving a
unique style of Cycladic architecture, Isternia, with its
amazing views of Syros and the azure expanse of the Aegean
Sea, comprises one of the many jewels of “the handmade
island” of Tinos. Among the sights of the area and
designated as listed monuments, representing as they do an
authentic example of popular art, are the windmills located
on the western limits of the village.
