Volakas
The
village of Volax is located 10km north of Chora and
approximately 4km north of Exombourgo in the heartland of
Tinos. It is situated in the midst of a dramatic lunar
landscape studded with rounded stones, rocks and boulders of
all sizes and scattered about in solitary or grouped
configurations looking for all the world as if they have
fallen out of the sky. The uniqueness of the landscape lies,
in point of fact, in these large expanses strewn with these
‘unearthly’ granite formations: this being the largest such
‘lunar landscape’ in Europe, and which, encompassing as it
does the very village itself, is listed as a protected area
of natural beauty. The village, which consists of small,
highly picturesque stone houses and narrow lanes, is
well-known for its basket-weavers who have a very long
tradition in practising their occupation in Volax. This is a
truly unique locality that additionally lends itself to
hiking and touring.
